Assignment Grading

Where can I find student submissions?

When a student submits a project, you will receive an automated email to inform you. Sometimes a student will simply update the existing submission (vs upload a new one). In this case, please remind the student to inform you that a project is ready for your review as you will not receive an automated email.

Submitted projects can be found under the "Projects" tab next to the "Student Profile" tab in the Mentor Dashboard.

  • If the "Status" column has a dropdown menu or an option to "Submit Feedback" that project requires your evaluation.
  • If the project has "N/A" in the Status column, that project does not require formal evaluation. However, some N/A projects still require student submissions and can be discussed informally during your mentoring calls.

When shall I grade submissions?

Please, review all submitted assignments and update their status in the "Project" tab of your Mentor Dashboard within 7 days of their submission.

Grading student work happens outside calls. You can provide feedback directly within the dashboard and in the document itself, then continue the conversation during your mentor calls for further discussion and support.

  • If your next scheduled student call will take place in 1-3 days, you may wish to provide feedback during your call.
  • If your scheduled call is more than 3 days away, a best practice is to add feedback in the grading dashboard or send feedback to your student via email or in a Google doc.

Once you have done this, mark the assignment as "Passed" or "Needs more work" to ensure you meet the 7-day deadline to grade assignments.

If students aren't attending 2 or more calls, please help us report them in the Student No-Show Report form. The Student Advising team will connect with them and decides on a potential freeze that will automatically unmatch you.

How do I grade student submissions?

When grading, it is important to base your evaluation using the provided rubrics and solutions sets (if applicable). Rubrics for all student projects and assignments are available in the "Projects" tab of your Mentor Dashboard or in your Mentor Course Handbook. The rubrics and solutions are also listed in the table below.

  • If an assignment meets all the requirements in the rubric, you can mark it as "Passed"
  • If an assignment is not meeting one or more parts of the rubric then mark it as "Needs More Work". After the student improves the work based on your feedback, you can review it again and update it to "Passed" when it matches the rubric.

After reviewing assignment(s), share the main feedback with the students to let them know what they did well/need improvement on. This will give them time to prepare for the next call where you will further discuss the reviewed assignment(s).

Additional Hireability Assessment

To ensure that student work is of high quality and supports their job readiness, we ask that you evaluate their work using a hiring lens in addition to the requirements in rubrics. Students are encouraged to revise their work until it's at a hireable stage. Hireability means if the work was presented to a hiring manager would the manager want to interview the student looking at the work alone? Note that this feedback is additional and doesn't impact the grade.

IMPORTANT: Do not share solutions with your mentees. Depending on the course, solutions may be made available and students should ask their Student Advisor if they have questions about accessing solutions.
